Epic Woman Camp 2013 Day 1

Epic Day 1:  2.5K ocean swim (next swims will be 3K!!), 152K bike, 10K run.

Awesome EPIC day!  Day 1 in the bag, ‘only’ 7 more days to go…

The day started with a 2.5K swim – out to the Kings buoy, back the 1500m buoy, back to the Kings buoy and then back to shore.  From here on in at the camp, we will be doing 3K by adding an extra back and forth to the 1500m buoy!  Reason:  It isn’t epic enough only swimming 2.5K!!!  I just LOVE swimming in this ocean and today was a nice clear day to see some great underwater lift – no dolphins…yet…

After a great breakfast with oatmeal, turkey bacon, scrambled eggs, toast, etc., we rolled out as a group to climb to Waimea.  Today’s KOM started about 65K into the ride, at the turn off the Queen K Hwy, up towards Waimea, averaging about 6% grade and lasting approximately 10K.  It is a steady climb and the sweat was pouring off my nose!  I worked hard, evidenced by my laboured breathing, and I was happy with my effort.  I paid a little bit for it later, as I felt some adductor cramping on the ride back to town on the upper highway.  GU watermelon chomps and a GU peanut butter (mmmmm) gel, helped to save the day and I made it back to the house ready to run off the bike.   Plan was to ride 180K but as I approached the optional turn to go longer, I realized there wouldn’t be time before dark and opted to just tack on from the 145 to 150K for one extra point.

10K run in 49 minutes felt like we were going faster than the time shows, but again, I was happy with the effort.

Everyone did great and the Play of the Day goes to Katie S who did the longest ride (165K) but she also realized that there was no time for the full 180K.  Once again, I am honoured to be able to train with such an amazing group of strong women!!

Good night.
