Epic Woman Day 7: 20K run, Captain Cook ride/swim/KOM

It really is a time warp…Day 7 is complete and we only have one more day to go.  This is just like Ironman…close to the beginning of the race, you think it will never end, and next thing you know, you are running to the finish.  It is a relief to come to the end, but sad because this intense and unique experience is also one I never want to really end (except for the fact you know you just can’t go on for even one more day – this camp is designed to enable you to push to your absolute limit)!

Today started with a 20K run (some did the minimum of 10K) and it was nice to run early, before the heat of the day.  Coach Nic helped me to run a sub 8min/mile pace including a negative split which was awesome – this is the fastest I have run on DAY 7 (in 5 Epic Camps).

After a good fuel up thanks to the support crew, we headed out on one of my favourite rides:  To Captain Cook via the Painted Church.  Today we decided to take the upper highway which added on a few kms but was definitely more beautiful and it was nice to do this part of the ride in a leisurely fashion (the last time we did the ride, it was a KOM)!  The descent down Noopoopoo Road is spectacular and once again, we enjoyed the smooth pavement surfaces of the Big Island roads.

We swam to the Captain Cook monument and while it is supposed to be 1.6kms one-way, I swear it is much longer.  Also, Suzanne and I got a little disoriented and tacked on an extra 5oom or so with our poor navigation skills.  It wouldn’t be Epic Camp for me without at least one missed turn…

After lunch, we did our final KOM and by the time I got to the top chasing Suzanne as hard as I could (she was on fire today), I was officially SPENT!  Perfect :)

Suzanne, Andrea, Ann and I added on mileage to get to 90K with a stop at Starbucks where we met Ape too…When all of a sudden, we realized we had better get going to make our 7pm cut-off time.  Well, you could say that was EPIC, because we literally made it with 20-30 seconds to spare!!

Tomorrow, for our final day, April will be wearing the Green Jersey.  Man, does this woman deserve this honour – she has been getting stronger by the day and today not only did she kill her 20K run, but she lead us out on the bikes a couple times toda and really toughed it out to swim to the Captain Cook Monument in some pretty challenging conditions.  She emerged from the ocean, shivering and shaking, but with a huge smile on her face.  Nicole (who NEVER cries) ALMOST cried because she was so proud!

Tomorrow is the final day:  90K ride with a 40K TT race, 5+K run to the Pier to do a swim race to the Kings Buoy and back, and then run 5+K home to the FINISH!!!!!!!!!!  Then we can celebrate at the Kona Brew Pub…and with an Easter Egg hunt!  Nic has hidden our Easter eggs including a giant Snickers Easter Egg as the big prize.

Bring on DAY 8!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will update all my totals tomorrow…
