Days 1 and 2 – Epic Camp Lanza

This is my third ever Epic Camp. It is really nice to come back and see familiar faces (Tara, Lisa, Suzanne, Bruce, Maya…!) and do what I love to do for 8 days straight.
My goal for the camp is to just lay down some big miles without totally frying myself. I am racing Ironman Boulder in 5 months, so this camp will really help me kick my training season into full gear.
I am now 2 days into Epic Camp Lanza – 25% through all the hard work, just like that! Well, not really just like that! They say that there are no easy workouts on this island, which I can believe. With the wind and the hills, there is never an option to do more than 50% of a workout in easy gear!
However, the temperatures have been very mild, which works out well for me, coming from the frigid cold of central Canada.
To me, the best part about these camps is to be able to train and hang out with some really kick-ass women. I am often towards the back of the pack in many of the training sessions, but I kind of prefer it that way. I like being in circumstances where my activities are not viewed as extreme or excessive. It’s comforting to be in a situation where I am the conservative one, in terms of exercise intensity and duration!
I brought along a Gopro this time – a very wonderful gift from my boyfriend, Ian. I have been shooting a lot of footage and have sometimes gotten a bit distracted by the artistic pursuit – after all, doing a time trial on a road bike with a helmet camera isn’t the most aero thing to do…
I’ve cycled through some amazing lava fields (Montana del Fuego) over the last two days. I think this is my favourite part of the experience. I love stark, expansive, energetic places.
Our hosts, Debs and Daz at TriSports Lanzarote, have been amazing. The meals and support have been top notch.
As of today, I have put in about 6km of swimming, 190 km of cycling and 27km of running, with a lot of hills and swells to keep things honest.
Looking forward to a new day!
