Day 8 Reflections – The End.

It is done!  Epic Camp is over.  Wow.

Saturday was one last tough day.  Up early to hit the road on the bikes at 6:00.  Ride 30K out the Queen K to the start of the Hawaiian State Time Trial Championships.  No, we were not spectating or volunteering.  The Epic Women were about 20% of the field!  At 8:00 we headed off on a hilly, windy course for 40K of all our legs would give us.  Some of our legs were more generous than others’!  I played tag with Iona for a bit in the middle, but she powered away from me.  Our fearless leader, Tara, came away the women’s Hawaiian State TT champ of 2011!  Suzanne, Andrea, Michele, April, Lisa, and Karina all got ‘er done out there.  And then just the 30K ride home.  Small bonk on the way back, but pancakes made by our Epic Crew were awaiting us!

The fatigue had certainly set in.  There was a lot of couch lazing post pancakes.  Tara finally got us going again by about 1:00 – out the door to run the final 5K of the camp down to the pier for the final 2K swim to the Kings’ Buoy and back.  And that was it.  Van pick up at the end.  Trip to Starbucks to finish the day.  Aaaah.

What a week.  A group of 8 women most of whom did not know one another, one house, 900K of cycling, 75K of running, and 20K of swimming, 3 awesome support crew, 1 fabulous camper/cheerleader, and the Big Island of Hawaii.  Bike accidents, Lisa battling some significant and serious GI issues for days, sunburns, Michele getting lost (but we always found her :-) ), and deeper fatigue than I think most of us have ever experienced before.  Well done, ladies!  I hope you can come back next year and we can do it all over again!
